2. Portals

At the bottom of the mountain slope, you can see a buried portal of a gallery with a great heap. The size of the heap informs us about the extent of the work underground. Chopped vein material and ceramic fragments from the 13th and 14th century had been found on the heap.

The ores were mined with hammer and tools looking like chisels. Per day shift the mineworkers needed up to 30 chisels since they lost fast their edges. For this reason, there was always a forge in the mining area where the forger produced and re-sharpened the tools. In most cases the galleries only had a ridge height of 90 to 100 cm. It depended on the hardness of the rock how many meters the mineworker advanced (from 10 to 50 meters) in a year using only hammer and chisel for his work.
